Frequently, multiple subsurface reservoirs are produced through shared surface facilities. When it comes to tasks such as history matching, it is far easier to simulate each reservoir separately but, in order to optimize the entire field development plan, it will be necessary to take into consideration constraints originating from the common surface network. The Eclipse reservoir coupling option offers an efficient solution to this problem. Each reservoir is represented by its own simulation model, but these are coupled through their production and injection targets and optionally surface network nodal pressures.

The Reservoir coupling option is frequently used in conjunction with the Eclipse Network option, which provides the pressure constraints from the surface facilities.
