Release summary

Petrel 2023 is a quality and stability improvement release where we have focused on ensuring the platform is robust and easy to use. Please read the release notes to find the full list of improvements and fixes delivered. Check out the latest technology updates on the Petrel platform web page.

Data (Studio)

Petrel 2023 offers several usability improvements when connected to the Studio™ E&P knowledge platform.

The “Sync status” column in the repository data table now supports a “Not equals” operator, enabling more flexibility when interrogating Studio platform data.

The default project quality attribute definitions have been extended to support “Data Status” and “Confidence Factor.” When set, any data sent to the repository without defined quality attribute values, will be assigned with the default values.

The notification details pane has been enhanced with the ability to “Retrieve all”   from the Studio platform, this option will ignore the default page size,   enabling retrieval of all the content from a notification filter in a single click.

Foundation

Petrel 2023 delivers new functionalities and enhancements to improve user experience.

The contents of a 2D window can now be copied across into a new map window which will facilitate mapping and printing workflows.

The performance of output sheets has been improved, making it faster to work with large spreadsheets on the Petrel platform.

The profile editor has been upgraded to have a better user interface and make commands available such as dragging and dropping commands into the new user profile, keeping the profile active

between sessions, and multi-selection of tools using ctrl or shift keys.

In the workflow editor the work step “For all icons in” now has the option to select an object type instead of an item from an existing project. By being able to select an object type, the workflow is project independent, which will make it easier to copy existing workflow across projects without any dependencies.

The statistics for surfaces with attributes have been improved and it is now possible to see the statistics of all the attributes when opening the dialog for the parent surface.

The reference project tool now has the option to show the settings of the objects in the background project, this enables users to see the history of an object and make more informed decisions when transferring data. If the background object has a counterpart in the working project, users can view the settings of both objects by right clicking an object and selecting “Settings” on both sides.

Geological interpretation

Petrel 2023 delivers several improvements for the histogram window, that include the statistic box, well filter, and an option to display percentile markers. Now users can display the statistics of the data in the histogram window in the form of a statistics table, as well as use histogram markers to show different P-values along the distribution of the histogram data. They   can also use well filters in the histogram window to filter data.  In the function window, a histogram overlay can be displayed to convey density distribution of the data.

There have also been several improvements for well tops. With zone spreadsheet filtering users can filter well tops zone spreadsheet for multiple wells and zone logs at the same time. The filter can also be applied on active saved searches. Moreover, users can quickly insert additional attributes to a well tops folder. This feature currently includes TVD but will be extended in the future.

Log export manager has a new checkbox "Add log type to the file name" that enables users to decide if the exported logs have "continuous" or "discrete" tags added to the file name.

A new option in the survey export manager enables the export of multiple deviation surveys into one .csv file.

There is a new simpler way to bulk-delete inactive deviation surveys by right-clicking at the folder or well level.

Moreover, there have been improvements in the make/edit surface process in the workflow editor. Now users can use an input surface for the "Threshold" parameter of "keep wells in zones", to account for differences between wells in the field.

Seismic interpretation

Petrel 2023 delivers several improvements to fault contact workflows. Fault contact sets can now be associated with seismic horizons and be automatically activated when a seismic horizon is activated. This allows a user to interpret a seismic horizon and associated fault contact set at the same time.     Fault contact points within a fault contact set can also be associated with faults manually, or automatically as they are created. When a fault contact point is associated with a fault; editing the contact point will restrict it to movement along the fault stick and when editing a fault stick, the associated contact point will move to remain on the fault stick. When generating a polygon from a fault contact set, a separate polygon will be produced for each fault.

Fault contact sets now have fault filters which enables the display to be filtered by desired faults. This aids in detailed editing workflows, especially when working with large numbers of contacts. Extract fault contacts contains a new option called single contact set mode which will produce a single contact set, where contact points are associated with individual faults.

Petrel Seismic Well Tie analytical and statistical methods in the wavelet toolbox, now support the generation of higher frequency wavelets for high resolution and ultra-high resolution seismic data.

Post stack AI inversion is now also available for high resolution seismic and wavelet. High and ultra-high resolution seismic and high frequency wavelets can be used together with standard low frequency AI initial models as inputs to compute normal incidence acoustic impedance 2D or 3D volumes.

Structural and reservoir modeling

Petrel 2023 delivers key usability improvements when working with structural frameworks. A new set of icons are now applied to any structural model to identify when a fault throw constraint is selected. This will occur automatically and make it clear how this parameter has been set for each fault in the model. Once a structural framework model has been generated, user now have access to a fault filter. This provides flexible control to display only the horizon-fault contacts needed.

With the machine learning property modeling solution (embedded model estimator [EMBER] algorithm)   available exclusively on DELFI, users can now exert additional controls on the modeling results through simulation intervention. Custom weights can be assigned to existing properties, that influence the modeling results while still honoring the envelope of the training data and avoid overfitting errors.

Facies and petrophysical modeling dialogues support direct input of nested variogram, to better reproduce complex observed spatial relationships. Up to four variogram structures can be nested into each model.

Geomechanics

The populate properties object has been improved in Petrel 2023 and now supports the reference project tool. This means that for the first time, users can copy a geomechanical model from one project to another and create new simulation cases in the new project, using the imported geomechanics domain objects. In addition, the populate properties process runs significantly faster now since we avoid creating a property folder on the “Models” pane. The property folder can now be generated on-demand from the context menu of the domain object, just like the fault cell activity option of the discontinuity modeling domain object. It is now much easier to specify overwrite properties as users can drop in a folder containing existing properties.

With regards to the discontinuity modeling process, the fault modeling domain object has a new option to generate a fault index. This discrete property is useful as a summary region in the define geomechanics case process. It enables users to easily report key VISAGE™ finite-element geomechanics simulator, simulation results for each individual mapped fault in the results charting tool, so that it is easier to analyze fault integrity. An equivalent option is available for mapped discrete fracture sets.

Reservoir engineering

Petrel 2023 delivers high-fidelity modeling of CO2 injection and storage, taking full advantage of the robust physics and performance of the INTERSECT™ high-resolution reservoir simulator. To model CO2 storage mechanism efficiently  , numerous features have been added to existing fluid and rock physics functions model processes. These features include detailed brine representation, diffusion for aqueous phase, hydrocarbon component solubility, chemical reaction to include brine and solid, and solid phase support including the effect of permeability damage via mobility multiplier tables. In addition, the water properties model has been extended to include the Ezrokhi model for water density and viscosity of aqueous phase, for better representation of water phase properties for CO2 storage workflows.

Users

The Petrel platform and Studio platform bring benefits to all geoscientists and engineers, including seismic processors, seismic interpreters, geologists, reservoir modelers, reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, production geologists, and data and information managers. They can be deployed by companies working in exploration, development, and production for either conventional or unconventional reservoirs and are now also fully used for developing new energy projects such as CCUS, geothermal and wind farm site characterization.
