New Software Release

Symmetry 2021.2 Now Available

Thursday, 10 June 2021

Product details

Symmetry process software platform captures all aspects of your models from reservoir to product distribution. The Symmetry platform offers a unique opportunity to model your process workflows in one environment, integrating pipelines, networks, and facilities models while ensuring consistent thermodynamics and fluid characterization across the full system. This approach, combined with a simple way to switch between steady-state and dynamic modeling, enables companies to optimize processes in upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors, maximizing profits and minimizing capex.

Key features of this release

Symmetry 2021.2 incorporates new features and improvements from previous versions. Symmetry 2021.2 includes a complete integration with MySep for separator entrainment rating in steady-state and dynamic models. The Symmetry Flare workspace includes the updated Flaresim 2021 version.

Symmetry 2021.2 enhances its hybrid modeling functionality with new options. Hybrid simulation allows combining rigorous models and machine-learned models in the same simulation. There are two hybrid modeling solve modes: molecular reduced order model (ROM) and external machine learning (ML). Molecular ROM encompasses the previous ROM functionality. External ML allows using external machine-learned models to replace the rigorous calculations in Symmetry platform. Unit operations in Symmetry platform can import a machine-learned model, generated outside of the platform, to replace or enhance the internal physics-based calculations.

Symmetry 2021.2 will be available soon within the Petrotechnical Suite in the DELFI cognitive E&P environment.
Some of the key new features are listed below.

  • MySep integration
    • Separator rating mode "MySep" in dynamics to solve with entrainment and pressure drop calculations from MySep Engine.
    • MySep Manager window to view MySep integration and browse detailed geometry and results data for each linked separator in steady state and dynamics.
  • Symmetry Flare workspace
    • Updates to Flaresim 2021.
    • Improved kinetic energy formulations in simultaneous network solver.
  • Hybrid modeling
    • Additional hybrid modeling capabilities. There are two hybrid simulation solve modes: molecular ROM and external ML. Molecular ROM encompasses the previous ROM functionality; external ML allows using external machine-learned models to replace the rigorous calculations in Symmetry platform.
    • Unit operations in Symmetry platform to import a machine-learned model, generated outside of the platform, to replace or enhance the internal physics-based calculations.
    • New Plant blocks used represent a process or part of a process without the need to model the internal details in the flow sheet. These blocks are particularly useful in the hybrid modeling platform. Plant blocks available are fractionation, NGL recovery, sulfur recovery, amine sweetening, and gas dehydration.
    • New calculation mode in the Selector Block unit operation to use an open neural network exchange (ONNX) model to calculate output based on selector block inputs.
  • Thermodynamics
    • Nine new refrigerants added to the component database and support for their mixture properties in the REFPROP thermodynamic model.
    • Improved water and heavy naphthenes (MW>200) solubility in APRNG2 property package by updating their binary interaction parameters.
  • Dynamics
    • Improved stability of transient dP calculation for hammer cases in dynamics.
    • Solution to issue preventing the use of REFPROP when multithreading is enabled.
  • Unit operations
    • (Property table) Solution to issue preventing export of OLGA dynamic multiphase flow simulator and PIPESIM steady-state multiphase flow simulator table files from when the Property Table unit operation was not located in the main flowsheet.

A full, detailed list of all new features as well as improvements and fixes is available in the “What's New” document in the Symmetry platform installation.
