New Software Release

Symmetry 2020.4 Now Available

Friday, 18 December 2020

Product details

Symmetry process software platform captures all aspects of your models from reservoir to product distribution. The Symmetry platform offers a unique opportunity to model your process workflows in one environment, integrating pipelines, networks, and facilities models, while ensuring consistent thermodynamics and fluid characterization across the full system. This approach enables companies to optimize processes in upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors, maximizing profits and minimizing capex.

Key features of this release

Symmetry 2020.4 is an update release incorporating new features and improvements from previous versions. Symmetry 2020.4 improves the performance of equilibrium calculations (flashes), as well as viscosity calculations with the TRAPP model. Symmetry 2020.4 now includes the latest emission factors calculations from the EPA AP-42 Chapter 7 updated in 2020.

A new mode in the Case Study allows users to leverage the power of scalable cloud on-demand computing by choosing to run their large case studies in the DELFI engine environment.

Symmetry 2020.4 will be available soon within the Petrotechnical Suite in the DELFI cognitive E&P environment.

Some of the key new features are listed below.

Thermodynamics

  • Improved calculation of APR Z factor by increasing the fugacity calculations speed
  • Optimized TRAPP viscosity model calculations. Speed up in calculations increases with number of components, about 100× speed up for 200+ components. Optimizations involved better matrix management in TRAPP calculation as well as the use of the Gcem library for mathematical functions
  • Speed up for PH and PT flashes between 1.5 and 2.5× for EoS and Activity thermodynamics models (speed up from Symmetry 2020.2 performance)
  • Speed up to other flashes (PS, T-V) between 1.5 to 1.8× speed up (speed up from Symmetry 2020.2 performance)
  • Fix for OLGA dynamic multiphase flow simulator import files created from Property table unit operation when a fluid does not have a critical point
  • Fixed display name of MF files from "mf Files (*.mfl)" to "mfl Files (*.mfl)" in Import Property Package window
  • Ortho Hydrogen and Para Hydrogen are now supported in the VMG RefProp thermodynamic model

Emissions

  • Added the latest EPA guidelines (2020) for Tank Emissions calculations (AP-42 Chapter 7)
  • Added a link to the case's ambient pressure in the emissions tool
  • Added tool to estimate tank cleaning emissions

Flare Workspace

  • Added a global flare safety Manager (Flaresim flare systems design and analysis software) window to navigate Flaresim software design cases and settings.
  • Allow a flare tip unit operation to be associated with multiple Flaresim software tip objects. Flow will be split evenly between all Active tips when appropriate
  • Enabled add and delete function of Flaresim software receptor grids from the Symmetry platform
  • Enabled add and delete function of Flaresim software receptor points from the Symmetry platform
  • Enabled add and delete function of Flaresim software tips from the Symmetry platform
  • Enabled viewing of Flaresim software isopleth plots for radiation, noise, and surface temperature for up to four grids simultaneously in the new flare safety Manager (Flaresim software) global window
  • Exposed additional settings for receptor points in Flaresim software flare safety calculations: "Emissivity", "Absorptivity," and "Area Ratio."
  • Exposed additional settings for Tip in Flaresim software flare safety calculations: "Burner Opening" and "Calc Burner Opening"
  • Flaresim software objects grouped as flare configurations where a configuration is defined as a set of associated fluid, stack, and tips
  • FlareNet software import determines pressure drop correlation from .xml file and assigns to Symmetry Pipe Segments

Productivity Tools

  • Case Study now has a new mode to run simulations using scalable cloud on-demand engine services. "Petroleum Engineering—Engine Access" and "Process Facilities Engineer" subscriptions in the DELFI environment are required to use this option

Other

  • Enhancements to the .xml import from HYSYS. Support for additional distillation column specifications, basic and rating specifications for LNG exchanger, rating specifications for shell and tube heat exchanger and air coolers, rotating equipment curves, and specifications for dynamics cases (separators, valves, controllers, and nozzles). Some improvements to unit operations location on the PFD

A full detailed list of all new features as well as improvements and fixes is available in the “What's New” document in the Symmetry platform installation.
