New Software Release

ECLIPSE 2021.4 Now Available

Wednesday, 05 January 2022

Product overview

The ECLIPSE industry-reference reservoir simulator offers the most complete and robust set of numerical solutions for fast and accurate prediction of dynamic behavior for all types of reservoirs and development schemes. The ECLIPSE simulator has been the benchmark for commercial reservoir simulation for more than 35 years thanks to its extensive capabilities, robustness, speed, parallel scalability, and unmatched platform coverage. The ECLIPSE simulator covers the entire spectrum of reservoir modeling, including black oil, compositional, thermal, and streamline simulation.

Release highlights

The ECLIPSE 2021.4 release includes key developments that enhance the performance, usability, and functionalities of the simulator suite.

Release updates

Additional user-defined-argument (UDA) support

UDA support has been added to the following keyword arguments:

  • WNETDP argument 2, which specifies the fixed pressure drop between the well and its group’s network node
  • GSATPROD argument 6, which specifies the fit gas supply rate to the group

Improvements to the CO2STORE option

  • A new DVD example deck is included demonstrating the use of the CO2STORE thermal option with additional hydrocarbon components.
  • It is now not necessary to respecify the WINJTEMP keyword if the WINJGAS keyword is respecified for a gas injector.

Improvements to radial grids

Various improvements have been made to the MULTR and MULTTHT functionality and for circle completions.
In the ECLIPSE 100 simulator:

  • radial transmissibility multipliers can now be used in the REFINE keyword
  • circle completion is now applied consistently for single reservoir models when using the COORDSYS keyword.

In the ECLIPSE 300 simulator:

  • the current radial transmissibility multiplier keywords can now be used in the REFINE keyword within the SCHEDULE section
  • when the MULTTHT keyword is used within the SCHEDULE section, circle completions are no longer excluded.

New reporting for well connection status

New CSTAT and LCSTAT summary keywords have been added to report the status of well connections in a similar manner to the WSTAT summary keyword for wells.

Other enhancements

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving the ECLIPSE simulator, ECLIPSE 2021.4 contains several changes to address issues discovered in previous releases. For instance, in both ECLIPSE 100 and ECLIPSE 300 simulators

  • the RESTART record written to the SMSPEC file now supports base case file names longer than 72 characters. This allows base case results from long file names to be loaded in Petrel Reservoir Engineering along with restart results.

Additionally, for ECLIPSE 100 simulator

  • the treatment of models with coarsened grids in parallel runs has been improved, in particular for cases including dual porosity, aquifers, or both
  • the reporting of aquifer connections in parallel has been improved.

Finally, for ECLIPSE 300 simulator

  • the pressure and saturation distribution when restarting a flux boundary condition model in parallel has been improved
  • the behavior of block summary vectors requested for any fine cell present in a coarsened grid has been made consistent with the ECLIPSE 100 simulator and connection summary vectors.
