New Software Release

Drillbench 2022.2 Now Available

Thursday, 30 June 2022

Product overview

Dynamic multiphase simulations for well control tasks including thermo-hydraulics, dynamic kick tolerance, worst-case discharge and dynamic kill simulations.

The successful drilling of challenging wells requires an in-depth understanding of the well margins and well control risk during all phases of the operation. The drilling process is extremely variable and complicated to model, so much of the dynamics involved have traditionally been neglected. However, with diminishing operational margins and increasing well construction costs, modeling the dynamics has become more essential and strategically important than ever before.

Drillbench* dynamic drilling simulation software has a range of applications organized into three modules. The main applications within these modules are:

  • Dynamic Hydraulics (Primary): for evaluation of the drilling window with respect to dynamic hydraulics and temperature
  • Dynamic Well Control (Secondary): for dynamic kick tolerance evaluations
  • Blowout Control (Tertiary): for dynamic kill calculations and blowout contingencies

Simulations performed in Drillbench software replicate a real-world drilling operation and provide a level of accuracy that would not be possible with simpler, steady-state models. Drillbench software provides a user-friendly tool that can be employed by all drilling engineers involved in challenging wells. The software is built around the well-control workflow, covering pressure control, well control, and blowout control.

Release updates

Dynamic Well Control – NEW unique well control engine (2022.2)

The engine in Dynamic Well Control is new based on the OLGA system for drilling, delivering an advanced, dynamic, three-phase model that is much more powerful than other well control models. Combining dynamic temperature with an advanced PVT model provides unique resolution and accuracy in phase transitions in the wellbore. This has a significant impact on the development of a kick, and valuable insight to significant design loads.

With better modeling of the wellbore flow process, the prediction of wellbore pressure loads, surface arrival time, and rate of gas is more accurate, leading to a better understanding of the actual well control risk. Consequently, the operational procedure can be optimized to drill the well as safely and efficiently as possible.
The new engine has several flexible circulation modes, covering both automatic circulation and manually configured batch runs.

DrillPlan connectivity (2022.2)

When used in combination with the automated workflows in the Drillplan* coherent well construction planning solution, projects from DrillPlan can be pulled into Drillbench allowing configuration of all simulation parameters and detailed, manually configured, sensitivity runs.

The two tools provide a unique solution for dynamic well control modeling, enabling the engineer to perform efficient, automated and easy-to-use workflows in DrillPlan, and, if required, switch to the expert mode in Drillbench.

DELFI version (cloud)

As part of the new release, a DELFI version will also be available enabling the use of Drillbench in the cloud.

Drillbench 2022.2 is easy to install and does not require local admin access for users.

Users

Drillbench 2022.2 is suitable for all drilling and well control engineers or experts. The software can be used for onshore and offshore wells covering a wide range of scenarios.
