New Software Release

Petrel Earth Model Building Plug-in Suite 2020.2 Now Available

Friday, 19 February 2021

Product overview

The Earth Model Building plug-in integrates the Omega geophysical data processing platform and Petrel E&P software platform to bridge the gap between the two historically separate domains of interpretation, velocity model building, migration and tomographic inversion. Joining highly visual and interactive modeling with computationally intensive inversion makes it possible to build more accurate, comprehensive earth models than ever before to solve complex imaging problems with greater efficiency.

  • Integrate Omega and Petrel platforms and extend workflows for a unified, reliable earth model
  • Industry-leading tomography and steering filters
  • High-definition and flexible velocity model representation
  • Full anisotropic (VTI and TTI) modeling
  • Large model and complex geobody modeling capabilities
  • Interactive localized imaging capabilities

In 2020.2 the following Petrel plug-ins for Earth Model Building (EMB) are now available for download from the Software Download Center using a single installer:

  • Seismic velocity modeling (SVM) to build a structural framework and property population with velocity information and Thomsen epsilon and delta parameters as well as density and shear velocities. Models are fully anisotropic, supporting both vertical transverse isotropy (VTI) and tilted transverse isotropy (TTI). The plug-in also enables earth model updates directly in the Petrel platform, with a tomographic solution computed in the Omega platform.
  • Map migration to update 3D positioning of horizons by using ray tracing to visualize the effect of earth model variation on a specific horizon without remigration of the seismic data.
  • Geobody mesh modeling and interactive structural model editing processes to create and edit complex geological bodies.
  • Performance of ray tracing and illumination studies throughout the earth model to provide insight into illumination variation or different acquisition geometries.
  • SeisCal application plus 1D ray tracing at the well location to define initial anisotropic parameters of the earth model, closely approximating the real geology.
  • Multiwell modeling integrating multiwell data to derive the Thomsen delta field and propagate it in 3D along the geological structure.
  • Near-surface modeling to build earth models for the depth migration of land data by using near-surface velocities derived from seismic refraction static solutions and merge these with existing earth models.
  • Localized seismic imaging to perform interactive Omega platform depth migration within the Petrel platform for an area of interest. This is used for earth model scenario testing. Data are directly visible within the Petrel platform without data transfers.
  • Localized common-image point (CIP) picking  to estimate residual moveout (RMO) in prestack migrated CIP gathers by automatically picking event depths or travel times.  Interactively test and refine picks for use in tomography workflow.
  • Build an initial orthorhombic velocity model via three methods: Sectored workflow, VFTI (Vertically Fractured Transverse Isotropy) workflow and Quadratic form tomography workflow.
  • PP-PS registration estimates misalignment between PP and PS depth images for use in joint PP-PS Tomography.
  • Full Wave Inversion QC (FWI QC) enables quantitative QC of FWI updates from Omega, including 3D model update visualization, data fit QCs and wavelet analysis.

Release updates

This release contains a bug fix implemented to prevent a crash which may occur upon exiting Petrel when on a virtual machine in a cloud environment. The crash has not been observed on on-premise workstations. If you already have EMB 2020.1 installed upgrading to this version is optional.  For first time installation, please install the latest version of 2020.2.

EMB 2020.2 is compatible with Omega 2020.1 and Petrel 2020.1 and later.

Users

The suite of tools, including Omega platform and Ocean Software Development Framework plug-ins for the Petrel platform, is designed for anyone needing to condition, process, model, image, interpret, invert, or otherwise handle seismic data or conduct AVO modeling.
