New Software Release

PIPESIM 2022.1 is Now Available

Monday, 12 December 2022

Product overview

The PIPESIM™ steady-state multiphase flow simulator is our flagship well and network modeling software for steady-state multiphase flow simulation. Together with the OLGA™ dynamic multiphase flow simulator, SLB provides a complete software solution for design and optimization of production systems. The product is suitable for use by production, process, and flow assurance engineers and those involved in multiphase flow simulation.

These notes accompany the release of PIPESIM 2022.1 from SLB. The notes describe changes in PIPESIM 2022.1 relative to PIPESIM 2021.1. This document should be read by all users of the program. The complete program documentation consists of the PIPESIM Help, the release notes, and the installation guides. The SLB Software Support Hub provides useful information about the product and a knowledge base. In Europe, North America, and major parts of South America and Asia, PIPESIM 2022.1 is now also available on the Delfi™ digital platform as part of the Delfi Petrotechnical Suite.

Release updates

New PVT fluid package: Symmetry
PIPESIM 2022.1 includes the Symmetry™ process software platform fluids engine as an additional PVT characterization package under the compositional fluid modeling options. With the Symmetry platform, you can define composition components by using a standard components list, or you can add user-defined components by specifying the fluid basic properties, such as molecular weight, boiling point, and others.

In addition, like the other existing fluid packages in the PIPESIM simulator, you can interactively perform flash calculations for various pressure and temperature conditions. The Symmetry PVT package is a powerful fluid engine that—in addition to the basic fluid characterization capabilities—enables you to model solid formation risks such as hydrates, wax, and asphaltene. It also lets you display a solid CO2 line on the phase diagram.

Support for ESP permanent magnet motor
In PIPESIM 2022.1, you can model the installation of a permanent magnet motor (PMM) in your ESP systems. The overall ESP system, including operating speed, power, head, and efficiency is adjusted based on the number of poles in the PMM, which allows for high operating frequencies greater than 420 Hz.

ESP motor performance parameters
When you enable Surface Power Correction under the ESP Calculation Options tab and add a motor and cable to the model, various motor variables are exposed as part of the ESP node and profile results. This includes motor load, efficiency, current, voltage, power factor, and cable voltage drop.

Gas lift diagnostics plot added to P/T and nodal analysis tasks
If you use a gas lift injection valve system and enable the multipoint option, the gas lift diagnostics plot is now added to the P/T and nodal analysis tasks. Previously, this plot was only available under the gas lift diagnostics task.

Python 3.9 upgrade; support for additional variables under Python toolkit
In this release, the Anaconda® environment has been upgraded to Python 3.9.13. In addition, more calculation variables are now supported in PythonToolkit. This includes:

  • Pipe coating details
  • Override corrosion options in flowlines
  • Relative permeability table
  • Emulsion viscosity table
  • Dead oil viscosity table
  • System variable: SPHERE_TIME_IN_PIPELINE
  • System variables for total moving or static liquid volume
  • Profile variable: SEVERE_SLUGGING_INDICATOR
