New Software Release

Petrel™ unconventional model builder 2024.2 plug-in now available for Petrel subsurface software

Wednesday, 24 September 2025

Product details

The Petrel™ unconventional model builder is a streamlined plug-in for Petrel subsurface software, designed to generate models for hydraulic fracture simulation in unconventional reservoirs. It introduces a guided workflow to construct a simulation model from scratch, with hydraulically fractured wells and field management scenarios. The plug-in leverages a mechanistic, fracture hydraulic modeling approach through local grid refinement, ensuring accurate representation of fracture propagation from the wellbore.

Petrel unconventional model builder 2024.2 is designed to function with Petrel 2024.1 or higher.

Release highlights

The guided workflow comes with preset default values for all input parameters, ensuring users can always create a basic simulation grid with wells. This plug-in integrates all steps needed to create an Intersect™ reservoir simulator case, which can be executed from the plug-in interface or directly from Petrel software.

Figure 1 illustrates a horizontal well with complex completions, featuring multiple hydraulic fractures created using the Petrel unconventional model builder plug-in. The well was created through the plug-in’s user-guided interface, and leverages its latest enhancements.

This latest release of Petrel unconventional model builder introduces several new features and enhancements:

Support for Intersect simulator user edits: Petrel unconventional model builder now fully supports Intersect simulator user edits, enabling users to create and include custom reservoir and field management edits directly within simulation cases generated by the plug-in.

Enhanced separator definitions: Users can now configure separators with virtually any number of stages, offering increased flexibility.

Improved reservoir temperature handling: The plug-in now correctly applies user-defined reservoir temperatures to Intersect simulator cases and accurately parses both Eclipse™ reservoir simulator format include files and Intersect simulator format IXF files containing reservoir temperature data for compositional fluids.

Well schedule tab enhancements: The well schedule tab was improved with new functionalities to facilitate working with large tabular datasets, improving usability and efficiency.

Updated Validation Behavior: Previously, the “Apply” and “OK” buttons were disabled when input errors were detected. From this version of the Petrel unconventional model builder onward these buttons remain active even if input specification errors are present, allowing users to save instances with incomplete or invalid configurations for later correction.
