The Unconventional Model Builder is a streamlined plug-in for Petrel™ subsurface software, designed to generate models for hydraulic fracture simulation in unconventional reservoirs. The plug-in introduces a guided workflow to construct a simulation model from scratch, with hydraulically fractured wells and field management scenarios.

Unconventional Model Builder 2023.1 is designed to function with Petrel 2023.1 or higher while Unconventional Model Builder 2024.1 is designed to function with Petrel 2024.1 or higher.

Release highlights

The guided workflow comes with preset default values for all input parameters, ensuring users can always create a basic simulation grid with wells. This plug-in integrates all steps needed to create an Intersect™ reservoir simulator case, which can be executed from the plug-in interface or directly from Petrel software.

Figure 1 illustrates horizontal wells with complex completions, featuring multiple hydraulic fractures created using Unconventional Model Builder plug-in.

 

Fast and simple model creation
The plug-in supports the creation of simple grids, the quick creation and/or import of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) fluid models and rock physics functions and accommodates various fluid and rock physics scenarios.

Advanced features
The Unconventional Model Builder plug-in allows users to design a horizontal well with various completions, including those with multiple hydraulic fractures. It supports configurations featuring non-uniform fractures or Stimulated Reservoir Volumes (SRVs). It also allows users to incorporate historical production data and/or predicted production data.

Complete Petrel U&O integration
In combination with Petrel Uncertainty and Optimization (U&O), the Unconventional Model Builder plug-in provides an intuitive reservoir simulation and uncertainty framework that enables the two main workflows:

  1. Simulation models generated from inputs, with gridding hydraulic fractures explicitly with the local grid refinement (LGR)
  2. An uncertainty manager for sensitivity and uncertainty studies, using the base Unconventional Model Builder created simulation model. This enables users to conduct risk and uncertainty studies on the input parameters in the plug-in.

Full Intersect simulator support
Unconventional Model Builder includes seamless integration with, and full support for, the Intersect simulator.
