DATA AND FOUNDATION

Project forward compatibility

With the release of Petrel 2021.1, we are delivering a step change to address a common challenge and enable project forward compatibility.  From Petrel 2022 onward, any Petrel platform project can be opened with a previous version of the platform, back to Petrel 2021. This will improve your operational efficiency by enabling you to adopt and take advantage of the latest technology developments faster.

NOTE: Due to roadmap changes and engineering prioritization, the above was not implemented and projects saved with Petrel 2022 and newer will not be backward compatible (e.g. cannot be opened) with earlier versions.

Studio 2021.1 reduces time to find your data

Studio E&P knowledge platform for Petrel 2021.1 delivers the ability to reduce the initialization time when searching for data in the Studio platform transfer tool. A new filter enables you to edit a set of threshold values to minimize the time it takes for results to appear.

Greater flexibility with the reference project tool

Updates to the reference project tool cover performance improvements and the expansion of the type of objects that can be transferred when there is a coordinate or unit mismatch between two projects. This gives you greater flexibility when transferring data from one project to another, and unit conversion ensures that data accuracy is maintained. For a full list of object types, reference the Petrel 2021.1 Release Notes on the Petrel platform Support Portal.

New and improved polygon operations

A suite of new polygon operations is delivered in Petrel 2021.1, offering greater flexibility across all domains within the Petrel platform. Improvements to existing polygon operations, and the ability to access all operations via right-click menus in the input pane offer meaningful improvements to your everyday work. For full details on the new and improved polygon operations, reference the Petrel 2021.1 Release Notes on the Petrel platform Support Portal.

One-click web map feature extraction

Quickly extract information to use in subsequent analysis by leveraging the extended inspector tool capabilities to identify and extract multiple web map features in one click.

Increased automation

Focus on analysis and value creation by automating manual and time-consuming tasks in the workflow editor. Petrel 2021.1 supports the conversion of triangle meshes to editable triangle meshes (and vice versa) and the deletion of fracture sets.. The new work steps also open other possible workflows such as converting string attributes to discrete point sets and manipulating predefined attributes like polygon labels x, y, and z angle positions through the workflow editor.

Manage your Petrel platform performance

A new Petrel platform health monitoring tool is delivered in the 2021.1 release. This new tool enables you to better manage your platform performance via a traffic light indicator and gives you hints if you overstretch your system resources. It also provides you quick tips and advised actions to take to avoid crashes.

EXPLORATION

Sequence stratigraphy in well correlation

Petrel 2021.1 delivers the ability to interactively interpret and edit sequence stratigraphy in the well section window, enabling you to capture depositional cycle information to better classify, correlate, and map well data.

Enhanced visualization and interpretation in well section

Enhancements to the well section window offer improved user experience when performing intensive interpretations. Customization of the read out box (color and font size) improves visualization and reduces visual stress. With a single click, you can display all well logs according to the defined template limits, and locking well tops by interpreter is now enabled to avoid accidental changes.

DEVELOPMENT

Evaluate multiple completion scenarios

The completions of a well have a major influence on its production or injection performance. In Petrel 2021.1, it is possible to evaluate multiple completions scenarios for a well without maintaining multiple copies of the well. By associating each scenario with a specific simulation case and comparing the production performance, you can design the optimum completions for your project. You can also manipulate your completions scenarios using the workflow editor and uncertainty and optimization process.

Seismic stratigraphy consumption

To accelerate structural model generation, Petrel 2021.1 enables you consume seismic volumes of high-resolution stratigraphy from third-party sources. This additional data can be used to refine the model, improve the overall model quality and semi-automate the structural model build.

Identify critically stressed faults

Identifying critically stressed faults in the subsurface is a critical step in defining your field development plan, particularly for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), carbon capture and storage, and geothermal workflows. The distance-to-failure algorithm has been extended to include additional outputs and is now available on structural frameworks and Depogrids. This operation uses Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria to provide an initial assessment of your fault model to identify areas of faults that are oriented favorably for slip and more likely to conduct fluids up the fault.

Improved structural framework quality control

To enhance the existing quality control and mapping workflows for structural framework models, options to convert model horizons to surfaces have been added through operations, the right-click menu, and the workflow editor. Converted surfaces extend options to analyze the model result through the extensive options available on these domain objects. This workflow complements the recently added well residuals tool in Petrel 2020.3 to ensure you can rapidly assess the quality of structural models you generate.

Faster Depogrid simulation exports

Petrel 2021.1 offers a dramatic reduction in the data footprint and runtime when exporting Depogrid cases for simulation. Separating the grid and property files and sharing common files across uncertainty and optimization (U&O) cases enables the optimization of export and re-export runtime by only writing data that has changed. The reduction in data footprint delivers significant time saving. For a 2.26 million cell Depogrid with a 25 realization U&O workflow with property modification, the export time is reduced from 17 minutes (14.7 GB data) to 4 minutes (0.8 GB data).

Depogrid workflow extensibility

Ocean coverage for Depogrids has been expanded in Petrel 2021.1, delivering enhanced extensibility and supporting custom workflows that will enrich the Depogrid solution. The new import and export API covers Depogrid and associated objects, including properties, in the open standard RESQMLv2 format.

Generate VISAGE simulator ensembles from the Petrel platform

Petrel 2021.1 offers you the ability to generate ensembles of VISAGE finite-element geomechanics from within the Petrel platform uncertainty and optimization process. To ensure you can consume the results easily within the Petrel platform, you can display results for a selected region in the charting window for individual simulations or multiple cases of an ensemble. The new Stress Calculator tool enables you to compute the mean and standard deviation for multiple simulation results and visualize them in 3D—enabling you to obtain a quantitative assessment of geomechanical uncertainty.

Greater simulation customization

The new flexibility in defining a property updating function for two-way coupled simulations offers greater flexibility and customization of geomechanics simulations. Updating mechanical properties with arbitrary reservoir simulation results enables you to simulate a huge variety of additional functions.

PRODUCTION

Rapidly update your reservoir model

Reduce the time it takes to assimilate new production data into your reservoir model and reassess history match quality within hours instead of days, using the Rapid Model Update tool, which is now part of the RE Extension Suite in the Petrel platform. Ensure more timely and accurate forecasting scenarios and keep your reservoir simulation evergreen by automatically updating and running reservoir simulation models in the ECLIPSE industry-reference reservoir simulator or INTERSECT high-resolution reservoir simulator.

Improved economic assessment of workover candidates

In this Petrel 2021.1 release, we continue to build on the workover candidate identification workflow first delivered in Petrel 2020.3. New economic indicators, including IRR and payout period, enable you to make more informed decisions based on a comprehensive understanding of the commercial viability of different workover options.

Users

The Petrel E&P software platform and Studio E&P knowledge platform bring benefits to all geoscientists and engineers, including seismic processors, seismic interpreters, geologists, reservoir modelers, reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, production geologists, and data and information managers. They can be deployed by companies working in exploration, development, and production for either unconventional or conventional reservoirs.
