This paper by ADNOC and Schlumberger, explains how a digital twin solution was introduced as part of the real-time operations center (RTOC) to optimize drilling operations and reduce costs. The digital twin leverages automatically captured data from surface sensors in an accurate and reliable way to improve field to town collaboration. The RTOC digital twin solution integrates standard physical models for hydraulics, torque and drag with advanced solutions using machine-learning algorithms. The solution improved the rate of penetration (ROP) regardless of the availability of downhole sensors.
This innovative approach based on modern data science and digital twin, provides a consistent and clear outcome regardless of service providers involved in the direct operations. It was trained, tested, and validated on more than 80 wells prior to deployment. It has also made the introduction of other algorithmic developments for real-time dynamic modeling possible.
